Osaka 4 Dispatched - Sakurajima

(1st known as 8B)

Sakurajima

Shipfitters and labourers, Osaka Iron Works. The POWs helped build ships and manufacture machines. The work supervision was set up the same as at all the other camps.

Canadians and British arrived from Hong Kong in the Tatsuta Maru, arrived Moji 22nd January 1943. Australians arrived in Kyokku Maru. Party of  Americans arrived in Coral Maru also known as Tagu Maru having departed Manila 20th September 1943, in a 70 day voyage with 15 deaths en-route. They joined British, other PoWs in the Coral Maru went to Hirohata, Niigata and Sukurajima.

1943 20th January was etablished as SAKURAJIMA Branch Camp.

1943 18th February was renamed Osaka 8-B

1944 25th July 1944 PoWs McGee and Wharton make escape attempt.

1944 26th July both  McGee and Wharton recaptured and executed.

1943 1st October camp was renamed 4-D

1945 17th May the camp was destroyed in air raid. The PoWs were transferred to 21-B AKENOBE (Osaka 6-B).
