To the North of the camp was a large swamp where there were millions of mosquitoes, these spread malaria throughout the camp.

 The camp commander Lieutenant Tamaki, ill treated the prisoners, 134 PoWs died at this camp. A War Crimes Trial (WO235/982), after the war, found Tamaki guilty of ill-treatment of prisoners, he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
