Service

The 1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment were stationed in Hong Kong in 1939 when war broke out.

The Japanese entered the war on the 8th December 1941 by bombing Pearl Harbour and attacking Malaya and Hong Kong.

George was CO of Pillbox 16 in Repulse Bay.

Hong Kong surrendered to the Japanese 25th December 1941.

1942/09/04 - Transported  in ‘A’ first draft of Hong Kong PoWs in the Shi Maru to Japan. These were known as the hard men, as many would not sign the ‘No Escape’ document. They were mainly from the Shamshuipo Camp.

1945/06/05 - Transferred to Tokyo 5B - Nigata

Three groups worked at the camp:-

Stevedore labour at port of Niigata (Marutsu), primarily foodstuffs and coal (Rinko Coal ) and labour at a foundry (Shintetsu)

1945/09/05 - Liberated from Tokyo 5B - Nigata. At 10.00 pm rescue effected as men departed camp by train for Yokohama. Arrived following morning at 7.00 am.

Departed Hong Kong 12th September 1945 to Manila where PoWs embarked. Then onto Singapore where Internees embarked.

Sailing via Colombo, Suez and Port Said.

Arrived Liverpool 27th October 1945.

 

1945/10/02 - WO417/97-2, Casualty List No. 1873. Previously reported on Casualty List No. 1140 as Wounded and Prisoner of War now Not Prisoner of War. Previous Theatre of War, Hong Kong.
