66 (Kings Own) Anti Tank Regiment

The 66 Anti Tank Regiment was formed in the town of Crosby to the north of Liverpool in April 1939.

1941/03/08 - 88 Field Regiment

Empress of Canada

1941, October - Transported ‘Empress of Canada’ via Freetown (West Africa), Cape Town and Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to the Far East.

1941/11/28 - The 88th Hield Regiment and 137 Field Regiment arrived in Singapore from England. The 88th Field Regiment was attached to the 9th Indian Division and the 137 Field Regiment to the 11th Indian Division.

The 88 Field Regiment were entrained to Mantin, about 27 miles south of Kuala Lumpur, and the 137 Field Regiment to Kajang. The regiments were not yet complete with guns and vehicles.

1941/12/09 - The Japanese entered WW2 by bombing Pearl Harbour and attacking Hong Kong and Malaya.

Attack_Launched

Japanese troops landed at Singora and Patini in Thailand and Kota Bhara in Malaya. The Japanese soon took control of the Kota Bhara airfield, severely limiting air cover to the Allied troops.

After their guns arrived, the three 8th Field Regiment batteries were sent to Ipoh, Alor Star and Kuantan, where the Repulse and Prince of Wales (‘Z’ Force) were sunk.

The 88 Field Regiment were eventually moved back to the West Coast at Fraser’s Gap, north of  Kuala Lumpur, and took part in the many battles down the Peninsular to Singapore.

1942/01/29 - Retreated back onto Singapore Island

On the 31st of January 1942, the Causeway joining Malaya to Singapore was blown in an attempt to halt the Japanese troops.

On the night of the 8th of February 1942, the Japanese landed on the North West side of Singapore Island. General Percival had made strong the North East coastline thinking that is where the Japanese would attack, but the Japanese bluff worked, as by the 15th February 1942, Singapore was forced into surrendering.

After capitulation we were all marched to Changi, after disabling and destroying their guns.’

The Liverpool Echo

Sergeant-Major Stanley B. Search. R.A.. aged 48, and whose home is at 62 Armley Road, Anfield. is now a prisoner of war in Japanese hands at Taiwan. An ex-Territorial, B.S.M. Search went to the Far East in September, 1941, and was reported missing at the fall of Singapore. He won the M.M. in the last war. In civil life he was a cotton sales. man in Liverpool.

The main work at the camp was clearing an old dried river of rocks and stones to make the ground ready to plant sugar cane. The PoWs worked from early morning to late afternoon with only shorts and loincloths for protection against the sun.

1945/02/07 - Heito Camp was bombed by the Americans killing twenty-eight POWs, The camp was closed. 

1945/02/27  - Transported in the Taiko Maru from Keeling, Taiwan to Japan.

1945/03/10 - Arrived from Taiwan. Fukuoka 24B Camp, Emukae, Senryu, Japan .

4th August 1946 - Stanley living at Armley Road, Anfield, Liverpool, passed away at Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool, aged 51.
