Awards

Awarded the British Empire Medal – Military Division – in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in the field – as quoted in The London Gazette Tuesday 11 February 1947. (numb37880)

BEM awarded at Tonchan - during the cholera epidemic 8th June to August 1943 he displayed exceptional devotion to duty he worked night and day in the most indescribably filthy conditions risking his life to do so tending his fellow men.

Personal protection against cholera was non existant - Sgt Riches himself subsequently fell ill with this complaint but luckily survived - recommendation BEM.
