History

Ernest was born Surrey, United Kingdom in 1877

Ernest went to India with the army in the early 1900s  left India with rank of Sergeant Drummer. Married his first wife in Madras. He went to Malaya in 1912 Malaya where he founded a band of FMSVF. Ernest prospered from very humble beginnings. After his first wife died he remarried to Lilian Violet. Known as Violet, she was born in Colombo in about 1890, moved to Malaya in  1925 as a nurse. She survived the sinking of the HMS Giang Bee and  spent the war interned on Sumatra at Palembang with their granddaughter, Miss Edith Cynthia Rose Kenneison, known as Betty, who also survived the sinking.

Died

Age 65

13th February 1942

Whilst Escaping Singapore on the HMS Giang Bee.

The HMS Giang Bee was a small armed coaster which sailed from Singapore with 300 civilans on board at 10pm on the 12th February 1942. After she left Singapore harbour in the evacuation she was soon overtaken by a squadron of Japanese warships. Passengers were given an hour to abandon ship before the vessel was bombarded and sunk.

Father of five sons, Charles and Donald being two of them.
