Alfred died in 1944, when the 1st Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment was heavily involved in the Burma Campaign as part of the Chindit operations, they were part of the 77th Indian Infantry Brigade.
The 1st Battalion were part of the Special Force, also known as the 3rd Indian Division, which was a key component of the Chindit operations.
Throughout the Mogaung Battle from 31st May to 27th June 44, Lieut Colonel DEGG led his battalion in a series of successful attacks against Japanese dug-in positions. This included the capture of a 1500 ft mountain and a surprise attack through a marsh waist deep in water.
