This shows how the Lists of Index Rolls were compiled

After the war these records were taken over at Southeast Asia Command in Kandy, Ceylon, by Major-General MacLean, D.A.G., A.L.F.S.E.A for the use of  the R.A.P.W.A (Repatriation of Allied Prisoners of War and Internees).

Some of these are available at KEW.

Java Rolls

  1. Nominal rolls of Java Parties Nos. 1 to 26 showing composition of partied and names of British, A.I.F. and miscellaneous personnel and dates of arrival and departure. Dutch names are with the Netherlands Section of the Bureau.
  2. Index rolls covering British Army personnel as above and all other army prisoners of war believed to be still in Java.
  3. Causality roll for above together with some sketch maps of cemeteries.

 

American Personnel - U.S. Navy, Army, Mercantile Marine, Air Corps. Etc.

  1. Nominal roll covering all known survivors U.S.S Houston, and their present whereabouts.
  2. Nominal roll 2nd Bn, 131 Field Artillery together with U.S. Air Corps, U.S. Mercantile Marine, civilians, etc., showing whereabouts.

 

Parties Ex Changi and Singapore

  1. Rolls of parties ex Changi and Singapore overland and overseas during 1942.
  2. Consolidated roll of paries ex singapore during 1943 and originals from which it was compiled.
  3. Nominal roll showing PoW movements from Thailand parties (as in 1 and 2 above) to Saigon and Japan via Singapore during 1944. This register contains complete roll of poW who left Singapore on 4th September 1944 and were torpedoed off Bataan on 21st September 1944 - 1,085 lives lost.

 

Statistical Summaries

  1. Schedule showing all parties overland and overseas, ex Malayan Administration. together with their compositions and destinations.
  2. Schedule showing commanders of British parties ex Changi.
  3. Schedule of sundry parties not ex Malayan Administration.
  4. Schedule of all Java Parties to or via Singapore and Sumatra.
  5. Schedule of Java parties 1 to 17a with break-up as to arrivals and departures.
  6. Schedule of parties under Thailand Administration.
  7. Copy of report on Thailand PoW position in Thailand as to causalities and numbers remaining in August 1945.

Miscellaneous

  1. Roll of British and A.I.F prisoners taken to Malaya and imprisoned in Taiping and Kuala Lumpur gaols. giving dates of all deaths. Each individual has been accounted for and a summary at front shows the dispersal of the camp by parties.
  2. Original rolls and strength return register from Kuala Lumpur PoW camp in Pudu Gaol.
  3. Roll of PoW taken in Sumatra alphabetically by Navy, Army, Britishers from north Sumatra recruited into Dutch forces, A.I.F. and R.A.F.
  4. Roll of PoW taken in west Sumatra, later moved to Moedan and then to Burma and Thailand.
  5. Roll of PoW taken in the Burma operations and imprisoned in Camp IV in Rangoon (British and American).
  6. Nominal roll of ‘F’ Force (British section) accounting for every person who left Changi, with appropriate summaries at front.
  7. Miscellaneous narratives and general information.
