Maros Maru

Departed Ambon Island August 1944

650 PoWs were transported from Ambon in August 1944 in the old steamship Maros Maru.

When Allied raids began on Ambon, Huruku and Celebes in 1944, the Japanese retreated taking 650 POWs with them, the Maros Maru transported them from Ambon Island back to Java which they left for Haruka Island in April 1943.

The journey took 60 days with 305 deaths from disease and starvation.
