To honour those who served their country

“In this their finest hour”

III. The Men who Served

The Singapore Memorial commemorates men of both the land and the air forces of the British Commonwealth who have no known grave. The men of the land forces commemorated are those who perished during the campaigns in Malaya and Indonesia or in subsequent captivity. They include a great many who died during the building of the Burma-Thailand railway, and also many who lost their lives at sea while being transported from Malaya into imprisonment elsewhere. For the air forces, the area covered is even wider; the memorial commemorates men who died during operations over the whole of southern and eastern Asia and the surrounding seas and oceans. Among them are some of those who retreated from northern to southern Malaya, then to Sumatra and finally to Java, as well as those who helped to bring final victory in Burma.
