1940/05/14 – Enlisted for duration into Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve

1940/07/26 – Posted to No.8 Flight Training School at Montrose and promoted AC1, then LAC and finally Corporal

1941/03/41 – Married Maggie Gold of Montrose. Maggie was 25 year older Bert had met and fallen in love with this older local lady while training at the Flying School and was determined to marry her before he embarked. 

1941/05/20 – Embarked for the Far East with 18 COL (Chain Overseas Low, which was a radar detection system.) with Convoy William Sail 9AX.

1941/08/05 - Arrived Singapore.

1941/12/08 - Japanese invade Malaya after landing near the Thailand border

The Japanese fought down Malaya to Singapore, the RAF units were then transported to Sumatra and Java.

1942/03/08 - Java surrendered to the Japanese

We know most of the death certificates at Sandakan were fabricated.

Of over 2500 PoWs, only six Australians survived Sandakan, as they escaped. The remaining died in the hands of the Japanese.
