Robert was on the fatal Dakota plane  crash which also killed Colonel Cyril Wilde.  At 09.30 on 25 September the Dakota, with 14 passengers and five crew, took off from Kai Tak airport in the direction of Kowloon Tong, the plane wobbled in the air - and disappeared. The wreckage was found on the lower slopes of a hill between Lion Rock and Beacon Hill. There were no survivors.
