Albert returned to UK and received an Army pension as he'd had to have a cartilage in his knee removed whilst a prisoner and it had become infected and he was never able to bend his knee well after that (he'd been a steel erector prior to joining the army in 1936).

He returned home on crutches, weighing about 6 stone having suffered from beri beri, dysentery and other illness. He was incredibly thin and remained so  during the rest of his life.
