On January 27, 1943 James was part of an attack on a yard building diesel engines for German submarines at  Tveje Merloese in Denmark. The plane was hit by German anti-aircraft at Tveje Merloese, some 55 km from Copenhagen, the plane hit the top of the trees at Merloese Farm and crashed. Both crew, pilot James George Dawson and navigator Ronald Harry Cox, were killed in the crash. They are now buried in honour in the cemetery at Tveje Merloese Church.

 There is a memorial cross built where the plane crashed .

The raid was a total success with the factory being totally levelled. Production ceased and Diesel Engines were never made again at this site.
